I run 3 monitors and full screen this app on all. When the computer sleeps and then wakes up, all 3 Windows screens are smushed into one. Never happened before this “upgrade”. Yet ANOTHER Microsoft fail.

The old version work better. The new doesn’t work.
  • Not as good as Citrix

The app is fine, but it’s not as good as Citrix. One of the most annoying glitches is that if you use a 2nd monitors above your laptop monitor and attempt to “maximize” the app to all monitors, it will do so but not fit correctly to the top monitor. The program doesn’t seem to be accounting for the menu bar on Macs. Because of this, the top of my remote Microsoft session is slightly cut off, and the taskbar on the top monitor is also slightly cut off. This doesn’t happen when using a side-to-side monitor layout, but it’s happened using multiple different vertical layouts that I’ve tried. I even had the same thing happen when I traveled out of state and used a different branded monitor. It also doesn’t let me copy and paste from the host computer into or out from the session, although this may be a restriction of my IT dept, so I can’t be sure this is the app’s fault. It also gives very few options. Citrix gives you more control over how your Mac keyboard translated into a remote windows session, including a better experience with shortcut keys. I feel like the Mac version of this software may have been an overthought on Microsoft’s part.

This app had its quirks but now the auto sign in with saved credentials doesn’t work at all. You can’t paste into the login password field so I’m forced to read and type a lengthily autogenerated password on every login now. Also what is Microsoft’s obsession with renaming things, RDP has been around for decades. “Windows App” is a ridiculous name, also could you have picked a more generic windows icon. Come-on guys, some of us out here rely on this software.
  • Confusing Name Change

I find it incomprehensible why the decision was made to change the very description Microsoft Remote Desktop name to Windows App. I am sure I will get used to the new name, but it is likely always hurt discoverability for future users.

Remote Desktop was pretty much perfect and deserved all of the 5 star reviews it had. It did what it needed to do and stayed out of the way in a full-featured menubar menu. And now we have Windows App that severely degrades menubar functionality and replaces it with a huge Connection Center window that doesn’t include a Detail View option. You can either have Giant Icon View or slightly smaller icons in List View. Finding the connection you’re looking for or modifying settings is really frustrating. This is a clear case of “the people who did this should be forced to use it.”
  • Why do this?

When this app was known as Remote Desktop it worked quite well for me. I spend all day in multiple RDP sessions across multiple networks, and rarely had issues. Why make radical changes to an app that had previously been working? If I am connected to an RDP session, and I lock my Mac to leave my desk, there is a high probability that Windows App (what a name…) will be hung when I return to my desk. I will then need to force quit the app and reconnect any previously open RDP sessions. This sort of fundamental problem with general usability speaks loudly with regard to the quality of Microsoft in general. To make matters worse, the clipboard breaks constantly - and I do mean constantly. It could be 5 minutes, it could be 1 hours, but your clipboard will break, preventing you from copy/pasting with your RDP session. Quitting the app and restarting fixes this. As of now, I’d like to “Force Quit” this app entirely.

If you rely on this to remote in to a PC for work, you won't be able to work and DO NOT delete your remote desktop app. You can't get it back and this crashes every time you're not typing for more than 2 minutes. It also can't read secondary screens so you have to quite and restart every time.
