I like this app because it’s an easy way to read mangas with out spending little-to-no money. I’ve had it for almost a year now and I still use it. You get coins every day, and the next day, you’ll get your coins refilled. I recommend it if you like mangas.

This app started out really bad, but has improved dramatically as of late. Now with a monthly subscription plan, it’s on par with the Shonen Jump and Viz apps. Competing manga apps (especially Kodansha’s K-manga app) could learn a thing or two.
  • Insane pay structure

I’m all for paying for manga to benefit the artists, but spitting a chapter into four subsegments of 8 pages and charging for each subsegment separately is money grabbing nonsense. It’s why scanlations are so prevalent. Manga Up should be ashamed of this practice.

The app can be used without spending any money. You get free points daily and can use them on most series. HOWEVER if you are not following a lot of series I think you’ll eventually run out of series to use your daily points on. This is the main problem of the app—updates are weirdly done in chunks. As a mechanism to spread out where you can spend your points, I think it’s fine. But it gets awkward and annoying when it’s also used as the units chapters get updated by. A chapter that should’ve been released all at once monthly or weekly is instead split into two or three timed updates. This is ESPECIALLY frustrating when they do this for finished series—Fullmetal Alchemist, a COMPLETED manga, makes HALF a chapter WEEKLY free point eligible, and won’t be fully “free” until 2027!! This makes the cost of reading it all at once significantly higher and also makes the experience of waiting for chapters of a COMPLETED manga much more aggravating. It should at least be a whole chapter a week?! Like a real manga magazine! Even for ongoing series, you might pay money to read the latest chapters and still have this clunky experience of only reading 2/3 of it and then having to wait another week or two for the last part. I would say if you intend to pay money, the app is mainly worth it for the completed series—it is much cheaper than buying a paperback volume, though I guess it’s typical prices for ebooks. And you get to read what you’ve purchased any time (regardless if purchased with free or premium points). For ongoing series, it’s still pretty price efficient but lacks transparency on update times. There should be more labels on series about when the next update is coming or if a series is going on break (I’ve been waiting multiple weeks for a series that was releasing weekly before and have no idea what’s going on).
