SciTE is an extendable development environment for editing and processing source code and markup language files. Extremely customizable, SciTE can be tailored to particular projects and work flows. Your preferred tools can be easily integrated into SciTE. The environment can be extended using the Lua scripting language. Asian language files in multi-byte encodings like Shift JIS are handled natively with no conversions which avoids possible corruption. For documentation and display, files may be exported with highlighting to various formats including LaTeX and PDF.

  • Might be worth $41.99 if it features worked...

I have used SciTe for years on Linux and Windows and it’s my text editor of choice. This Mac port is a crap. Save/Load Session does not even work. Other features as others have noted also do not work. Please don’t waste your $41.99. Simply not worth it.
  • learning lua but

I have used a combination of BBedit and the terminal for working with Lua for a while. However, there is a new upgrade for BBEdit that costs nearly as much as this app. I tried looking around for info and in a few places read that SiTe is generally better than BBEdit. One reason that I bought this app because it was highly recommended in the book BEGINNING LUA WITH WORLD OF WARCRAFT ADDONS, and that the app include a “Go” function. That looked like I could do just about everything from this one app. When I tried running a current lua file from the app, I got this message: >lua5.1 "fact.lua" shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: Operation not permitted /bin/bash: lua5.1: command not found >Exit code: 0 I guess that this is combination of permissions and the fact that I have Lua 5.3.3 which installed on my home directory when I followed the Lua installation/make instructions. The /bin/bash:lua5.1 looks windowish to me????
  • Love it but needs some polishing touches

I’ve used Scite on the windows platform for years, so it was a no-brainer. I do wish the "File -> Open Recent” feature would actually work though. It’s never done anything and I open _plenty_ of docs with this editor.
  • Not working for Python on Yosemite

I’ve used SciTE on a PC doing Python for years and it is awesome. I’m trying to move to Mac and saw this port. When I try to run Python from F5 (Tools, Go) I get the error: shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: Operation not permitted. So some kind of a permissions error but not being a Mac guy I’m lost. There is no Mac specifc info with the app, and there is no way to contact the developer. This app was updated in April, so I expected it to support Yosemite?
  • SciTE is Great

I'm really glad that this was ported to a native Mac application. It's such a good tool, and it's got pretty decent Mac integration, considering how powerful this tool is. There's some really minor idiosyncrasies, but no show-stoppers. Looking forward to new versions.
  • Former Windows users - Miss Notepad++? Well this app was used to make Notepad++

If you're looking for a wonderful app with a long background and a HUGE number of followers, this is it. Most people don't realize this app is the origin for Notepad++ on Windows which is so loved. Development costs/App store costs make sense for why they are charging for this and as a former contributor to Notepad++'s developers, after my change to Mac OS - I am proud to have the feel of my old editor back! With that, I don't mind paying the cost for an amazing product. There is absolutely nothing better in the editor market. Not to mention, almost all great editors began with much of the code from this product like I mentioned with Notepad++ and even CodeAssistor heavily used on Mac OS. If you are willing to spend money for an excellent editor, then my recommendation is that you don't try anything else.
  • Fast and highly extensible

SciTE is a great, highly extensible, and fast text editor. I use it mainly to edit R and LaTeX files. The developer and the SciTE mailing list provide nearly instant feedback on any problems that may arise. Previously I had tried BBEdit, TextWrangler, Fraise, and Tincta. I find this text editor be far superior for my needs (they were either too bloated, no longer in development and buggy, or didn't have the features I wanted). I highly recommend this editor.
