BBEdit is the leading professional text, code, and markup editor for the Macintosh. As the "go to" tool for web site designers, web application developers, writers, and software developers, this award-winning product provides an abundance of high-performance features for editing, searching, and manipulation of text, code, and HTML/XML markup. As a replacement for TextWrangler, BBEdit is built by the same developers, using the same award-winning technology, and is identical to TextWrangler in every way you're used to. BBEdit is Apple Silicon native, and compatible with macOS Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, and Ventura. An intelligent interface provides easy access to BBEdit’s best-of-class features, including: grep pattern matching; search and replace across multiple files; project definition tools; function navigation and syntax coloring for numerous source code languages; code folding; FTP and SFTP open and save; AppleScript, Automator, and Shortcuts support; Unix scripting support; text and code completion; a complete set of robust HTML tools; and more. BBEdit offers a 30-day evaluation period (beginning the first time you use it on your computer), during which its full feature set is available. During the evaluation period, BBEdit is fully functional. After the evaluation period has expired, you can continue to use BBEdit for free, forever, with no nag screens or unsolicited interruptions. In “free mode”, BBEdit provides a modified set of features, which incorporates a powerful set of core features. Using BBEdit in free mode costs you nothing, while providing an upgrade path to advanced features and capabilities. To enable BBEdit’s advanced features after the evaluation period is over, you will need to have an active BBEdit subscription. Subscriptions are available on either a monthly or annual basis. An active subscription gives you access to all of BBEdit’s advanced features, including any new features that we introduce during updates or major upgrades, for as long as the subscription is in good standing. Please see our comparison chart for a detailed listing of which advanced features are available with a subscription. Subscription terms and conditions: We do not collect any data from your use of BBEdit, whether or not a subscription is in effect. Your interactions with BBEdit and with Bare Bones Software, Inc. are protected by our privacy policy. Your use of BBEdit is governed by the terms of its end-user license. When you purchase a subscription, payment will be charged to your iTunes Account upon confirmation of purchase. Your subscription will renew automatically, unless you cancel your subscription at least 24 hours prior to the end of the currently active subscription period. Your iTunes Account will be charged for the renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the currently active subscription period, and your account history will reflect the cost of the renewal. You can manage your subscription and cancel automatic renewal by going to your "Manage my Subscriptions" page after purchase. Purchasing a subscription will permanently end your evaluation period, and forfeits any unused portion of the evaluation period, if applicable. 1. When I just edit theme color, it creates a copy, which I can't delete it or rename.. Next, Dark theme is just really bad.. I just want a Xcode 15 like theme for Light/Dark appearance! 2. Veiw-> Text Display -> Hide Page Guied will not be saved after app close!

As an excellent basic text editor, BBEdit cannot be beat. There are other IDE-like editors out there that are better for specialized applications, but it is the one I reach for when I want to take a llook at a wide range of files. It is a good counterpart to notepad on Windows.
  • Not made for programmers

This application falls short in very basic categories and is poor (at best) for editing python code. Somple things like the use of the tab key, auto commenting blocks and functions tracing are not available. Not a plus for an DIE. Better free replacements include Sublime Text, pyCharm, and every other text editor on the planet. Pass!!

BBEdit is the reason I use a Mac. Seriously! There is a major shortage of good text editors (in my opinion) on Windows. Over the years, I've become so much more productive because of all the features that BBEdit has built-in. These days I feel lost without it. Please give it a try--it's amazing.

Been using this for years. Whenever I need to open something that "looks" like text, I used this, and it usually works. Also nice for managing text files with search and replace, etc. Highly Reccomend

not just for webmasters or coding tasks. avg d-bags like me use it all the time and i only know how to sniff out video links to rip videos im not supposed to download. you can thank MacGeekGab for my purchase & review. a little background about how i happened on this app. I am not a professional IT anything ... if i had to describe my mac app abilities, I would consider myself a combination of sonic the hedgehog and a data hoarder. My lack of professional training and introduction into the apple / mac OS environment - began with an impulse buy of a 1TB time capsule to backup an IBM thinkpad in 2009 after a layoff - needing to backup my work laptop and personal data synced to a company servper. i hated windows and had never used a mac. i used computers t the time for porn and bill pay. the combination of my iphone, bonjour, airport utility iphone app, me.com and the ease of use and ability to tinker with the network led to the purchase of a 27" imac. here we are about $75,000 later of redundant apple gear i dont need but love. because i started computing backwards rather than with a purpose, my organic approach has led to me learninging best by taking things apart and an "if this, than that" approach. i picked this app up along the way because im an avid MGG (mac geek gab - podcast) listener and they would not shut up about this app and OnyX. i bought em both and could not live without em. yes there are quirks to master with app store vs website purchases - but i actually like it that way. most good utilites have a support teams and options to meet everyones situations or workflows and BBEdit is definitely one of those apps. this is the nature of the beast we created - any thie barriers and sometimes frustrating compatibilty issues is all on APPLE (unless the app is supported by a deadbeat developer that is unengaged) - that is not BBEdit or their support team. they speak english and respond timely and with intent to solve your problem. download it. use it. master the options available to you in terms of app store purchases vs perpetual licenses and ability to upgrade ... once you take that frustration out of the equation and focus on the feature and benefits of the actual app - you wont be ale to live without it. again i know just enough to be dangerous - and this application is in my top 10. along with Onxx. little snitch, tech tool pro, micro snitch, file juicer, site sucker, clean my mac x, Paste, copy clip, VueScan & mac updater. customer support is very repsonsive and will go out of their way to help, accomodate or solve your problem. if you have an issue unrelated to the functionality of the app - go their website and reach out to them directly rather than post a review that skews the data on ratings of relevance and other search terms meant to return results on functionality and features vs ones feelings due to lack of research. try it. buy it. read the user guide. do it. i am 100% unafilliated with this app or company just thought id give some love. i know i know - lots of gobbledygook word salad; sorry for partying. if you read the entire post you got my free top 10 list of apps i install after nuke & pave or desktop/laptop upgrade. so if i didnt help at least you have 10 other apps to go try now.

I've been using this app, the free version, for about a year as I learn to use SASL for X-Plane. I am very much a beginner. It has served me well so far and the more I use it the more I discover how very useful it is. I especially appreciate the multi file search and the ability to find differences between two files. I'm sure there are many more features that I've yet to discover. Thanks for making this and for supporting people like me who are just starting out!!
  • An indispensable part of my applications

BBEdit is my #1 favorite text editor on Mac. I use it every day for everything from simple note taking, to scripting, doing large find and replace jobs on massive text files, and anything else I might need to do involving text. It is elegant in it's simplicity and clean interface, and powerful and speedy in functionality. Whenever I set up a new Mac, it is one of the very first apps I install and I don't see this ever changing. Just an excellent part of my Mac toolkit for work and personal duties.
