“Lightning” gives us the amazing ability to tap into a network of radio receiving stations scattered around the world which can detect individual lighting bolts over practically the entirety of Earth’s surface. Data arrive within 1 to 3 minutes and we can be alerted when it’s time to unplug our computers (even if they’re protected by surge protectors, which are apt to be insufficient matches to a billion-volt lightning strike anywhere nearby). The app lets us see where lightning is now and where it is the most on average over a full year. And it can teach us just how intense a lightning bombardment can be, with a storm so intense that the dots cover the map several times over. Strikes up to one hour old are shown, with three color codes for time since detection.

Took photo of map-how close 15 & 30 minute strikes were to my location when I heard the storm. Now I know exactly when it’s going to happen. ///// A little doggy lesson:I have the -lightning strike alert- set to go off within 30 miles every 15 minutes. This gives me enough info to prepare and manage dog in the house that’s terrified of storms. I remove breakables or take us to a certain part of the house. I am completely calm, he has no idea what’s going on. I may give him a rawhide or snack. When it’s about to start I turn music or tv up just a little. If I do it a lot he catches on. Sometimes he doesn’t hear the storm for a while. I’ll laugh at tv, act happy, Pet him if he’s close. And also he has learned the pitch in my voice when I say, “it’ll be done very soon. It’s passing over” (and I repeat myself a few times) and I tell him a little early and he calms down early. I’m happy 😁 Hint: if dog acts terrified pet him and talk to him in calming voice unless it makes him worse. If my dog thinks I’m pitying him or paying too much attention or even talking in baby voice he freaks out more. Every dog is different. I just act kind, calm, and treat him like a kid. In a negative but not mean voice I say oh hush you’ll be ok. It’ll be over in a little while. Stuff like that. In the beginning I’d sit with him and pet him but he wouldn’t have it anymore. lol. I’ve turned radio up danced sung and laughed. I’m sure I looked crazy but he’s totally gotten out of it for periods of time. Did my duty. Hope this helps someone.

Keith R.Carey I fish and sometimes you can’t see coming over the hills and trees around the rivers & Lakes I fish! I check my phone a few times to check weather !! They use to have a siren to warn you that’s a weather bulletin danger in your area! They don’t have that and when you’re a little hard hearing that really helped with a vibration. I wish they’d bring that back!!! It was a lot safer fo citizens as far as the watch & warnings go???

This app hands down has the best real-time lightning data available to the public! And animation included for free! I run a similar lightning website for grlevelx software (freelightning dot com) and this app has helped me very much! I highly recommend it for staying updated when dangerous lightning is approaching. 5/5 stars! I don’t know what else to even suggest as this app has it all! Thank you! -Derek

I love the accuracy of this app. However. I want an option to see previous days strikes and to tailor the strike area not to target area.
  • Great app. Full screen ads are annoying.

I manage a youth organization and not only use this all the time myself, but also require my volunteers to download and use. Helps us make informed, timely decisions to ensure safe outdoor events.

  • Useful for tracking lightning

I have to keep track of nearby lightning activity to be able to know when I need to disconnect ham radio antennae and equipment. This is VERY useful for that.
